Ontario Tech University’s impressive reputational trajectory for top-notch research continues with a fresh distinction as Canada’s Research University of the Year for 2023. The accolade comes from Research Infosource (RI), Canada’s premier research ranking organization and leading provider of research intelligence for business and higher education.

Ontario Tech University’s emergence as a powerful voice in Canada’s research sector stems from its strategic commitment to listen to industry, community and government partners to fully understand their pressing needs and challenges. Its research approach follows a coherent formula that is collaborative, responsive and results-driven.

As one of the country’s youngest research-intensive institutions, over its first two decades Ontario Tech has climbed to the top of the RI rankings for its research portfolio, reputation among partners, and solid growth in industry-sponsored research income.

The RI report released on December 7 specifically reflects data for the 2021-2022 fiscal year (FY). Now at No. 1 in its tier, Ontario Tech first moved into RI’s Top-3 among Canada’s smaller research universities in 2021, before jumping to No. 2 last year.

Ontario Tech shines in Research Infosource’s Five-Year University Spotlight

The new RI report’s five-year university spotlight contains a number of further key research growth achievements:

  • No. 1 in Canada in cross-sector collaboration publications percentage growth (261 per cent increase between 2017 and 2021).
  • No. 2 in Canada in corporate research income percentage growth (497 per cent increase between 2018 and 2022).
  • No. 2 in Canada in international collaboration publications percentage growth (165 per cent increase between 2017 and 2021).

With total university research income now surpassing $23 million annually and growing by about eight per cent every year, Ontario Tech also boasts strong growth in not-for-profit research income, international government research income, and international collaboration.
