India v England Betting Tips and Preview
- India vs England
- First Test (of five)
- Thursday 25 – Monday 29 January, 2024, (4am UK, Live on Discovery+)
- Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad
If England win in India, given the quality of opposition, the conditions on the field and the intensity off it, it will be an absolutely outstanding effort from Ben Stokes and co.
India aren’t the world number one ranked side – Australia hold that honour. But England legend Darren Gough recently described India as “almost the perfect team in many ways”, highlighting the size of the task ahead in spin-friendly conditions.
I will lay my cards on the table. I expect England to lose. But I do expect them to strike the odd blow here and there. Put it this way, I think they will win a Test Match.
India are short-priced favourites, both to win the series and the first Test.
Instead of going on an outright series win, I would be taking India 4-1 correct score, which is 5/1 with William Hill and one of their enhanced odds ahead of the series starting. It would be a surprise if there’s a draw.
If England are going to win this series, Joe Root has to hit a hot streak of form. Mind you, he performed well last time England toured India in early 2021 and they still lost the four-match series 3-1.
On that occasion, Root scored 368 runs – more than any other batter from either side – with a best of 218. To me, he has to do the same again, especially with England missing Harry Brook for personal reasons.
Given his quality against spin, I think the 23/10 available with betfair is good value for him to be England’s top series run-scorer.
Root and Leach to shine in opener
Both sides have been dealt a pre-series blow in their batting departments.
Brook is missing for England for personal reasons, potentially for the whole series, while Virat Kohli is out of the first two Tests – also for personal reasons.
It won’t surprise you that I’m going for Root success. Betfair have him at 17/10 – a price boost – to score a first-innings fifty. I would be taking that.
Another man who has to have a good series if England are going to have any chance is Jack Leach. The left-arm spinner will get plenty of overs, so I’d be taking Ladbrokes’ 5/2 on him to be England’s top first-innings wicket-taker.
bet365 have also boosted Root to 11/4 to be England’s top first-innings batter in Hyderabad.
I also have a serious amount of faith in the ability of India’s young batting star Shubman Gill, as you will know if you have been following my IPL and World Cup tips over the last year or so.
Now, Gill, who batted at three for India in their recent two-match series draw in South Africa, isn’t in red hot form at present. He is, in fact, due a significant score. He is without a fifty in his last eight innings across all formats.
But I expect him to come good sooner rather than later and believe betfair’s juicy 9/2 on him to be India’s top run-scorer in the first innings is worth taking on.
