Changes in Rules Impacting International Students in Canada | Ahmedabad News – Times of India

Ahmedabad: For Sarvesh Patel (name changed), 23, his Canadian dream started in May 2023 when he enrolled for finance and sports management courses after having his bachelor’s degree in management studies from Ahmedabad.
“It took me three months to find a job. Instead of job portals, the only way it worked was giving applications to all possible stores by hand and requesting them to inform if there is any opening. After a year, there is not much change in the scenario as I believe there are 25 applicants for every job in Toronto and periphery,” says Patel. “I am not saying that getting a job is impossible for a student, but one needs to know what they are signing up for when they start off from Gujarat with high hopes.”

Rules changed, all eyes on Sept intake

With yet another change in regulations related to international students expected in form of post-study work permits restricted for specific fields, Gujarati community in Canada is keeping an eye on the Sept intake. It will be the first major intake after change in existing rules.
Hemant Shah, director (trade) at Overseas Friends of India Canada (OFIC) and a prominent member of Gujarati community in Winnipeg, said that the rules will surely impact the inflow which was at historic high levels for the past few years.
“Many from Gujarat saw short-term courses as a way to get a foothold in the country and work towards permanent residentship (PR) in Canada. The trend will stop for most, as only those who align with the long-term requirement of the country may have a shot at it,” said Shah.
Shiv Bhasker, president of OFIC, said, “I recommend all to properly study the opportunities and understand why they are coming to Canada,” he said. “The students should not use the Canadian universities as the visa office.”
